BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women worldwide. The relationship between remnant cholesterol (RC) and the prognosis of patients with breast cancer has not been clearly reported. This study investigated the prognostic value of RC in predicting mortality in patients with breast cancer. METHODS: This study prospectively analysed 709 women patients with breast cancer from the Investigation on Nutrition Status and Clinical Outcome of Common Cancers (INSCOC) project. Restricted cubic splines were used to analyse the dose-response relationship between RC and breast cancer mortality. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to evaluate the overall survival of patients with breast cancer. A Cox regression analyses was performed to assess the independent association between RC and breast cancer mortality. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) using the propensity score was used to reduce confounding. Sensitivity analysis was performed after excluding patients with underlying diseases and survival times shorter than one year. RESULTS: A linear dose-response relationship was identified between RC and the risk of all-cause mortality in patients with breast cancer (p = 0.036). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log-rank test showed that patients with high RC levels had poorer survival than those with low RC levels (p = 0.007). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses showed that RC was an independent risk factor for mortality in women patients with breast cancer. IPTW-adjusted analyses and sensitivity analyses showed that CR remained a prognostic factor. CONCLUSIONS: RC is an independent risk factor for the prognosis of patients with breast cancer, and patients with higher RC levels have poorer survival.

BACKGROUND: Lenvatinib is widely used in treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC), but the benefit of its combination with immunotherapy needs to be verified. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of tislelizumab plus lenvatinib in systemic treatment-naïve patients with uHCC. METHODS: In this multicenter, single-arm, phase 2 study, systemic treatment-naïve patients with uHCC received tislelizumab 200 mg every three weeks plus lenvatinib (bodyweight ≥ 60 kg: 12 mg; < 60 kg: 8 mg; once daily). Dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs) were evaluated in safety run-in phase to determine whether to enter the expansion phase. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR) assessed by independent review committee (IRC) per Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors, version 1.1 (RECIST v1.1). Based on Simon's two-stage design, > 6 responders were needed in stage 1 (n = 30) to continue the study, and ≥ 18 responders were needed by the end of stage 2 (n = 60) to demonstrate statistical superiority to a historical control of lenvatinib monotherapy. RESULTS: Sixty-four patients were enrolled. No DLTs were reported. The study achieved statistical superiority (p = 0.0003) with 23 responders assessed by IRC per RECIST v1.1 in the first 60 patients of the efficacy evaluable analysis set (n = 62). After a median follow-up of 15.7 months, confirmed ORR and disease control rate were 38.7% (24/62, 95% confidence interval [CI], 26.6-51.9) and 90.3% (56/62, 95% CI, 80.1-96.4), respectively. Median progression-free survival was 8.2 months (95% CI, 6.8-not evaluable). Overall survival rate at 12 months was 88.6% (95% CI, 77.7-94.4). Grade ≥ 3 treatment-related adverse events occurred in 18 (28.1%) patients. CONCLUSIONS: Tislelizumab plus lenvatinib demonstrated promising antitumor activity with favourable tolerability as first-line therapy for patients with uHCC. BACKGROUND: Hypertension management in China is suboptimal with high prevalence and low control rate due to various barriers, including lack of self-management awareness of patients and inadequate capacity of physicians. Digital therapeutic interventions including mobile health and computational device algorithms such as clinical decision support systems (CDSS) are scalable with the potential to improve blood pressure (BP) management and strengthen the healthcare system in resource-constrained areas, yet their effectiveness remains to be tested. The aim of this report is to describe the protocol of the Comprehensive intelligent Hypertension managEment SyStem (CHESS) evaluation study assessing the effect of a multi-faceted hypertension management system for supporting patients and physicians on BP lowering in primary care settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CHESS evaluation study is a parallel-group, cluster-randomized controlled trial conducted in primary care settings in China. 41 primary care sites from 3 counties of China are randomly assigned to either the usual care or the intervention group with the implementation of the CHESS system, more than 1600 patients aged 35-80 years with uncontrolled hypertension and access to a smartphone by themselves or relatives are recruited into the study and followed up for 12 months. In the intervention group, participants receive patient-tailored reminders and alerts via messages or intelligent voice calls triggered by uploaded home blood pressure monitoring data and participants' characteristics, while physicians receive guideline-based prescription instructions according to updated individual data from each visit, and administrators receive auto-renewed feedback of hypertension management performance from the data analysis platform. The multiple components of the CHESS system can work synergistically and have undergone rigorous development and pilot evaluation using a theory-informed approach. The primary outcome is the mean change in 24-hour ambulatory systolic BP from baseline to 12-month. DISCUSSION: The CHESS trial will provide evidence and novel insight into the effectiveness and feasibility of an implementation strategy using a comprehensive digital BP management system for reducing hypertension burden in primary care settings. Background and aim: A high aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio is associated with liver injury in liver disease; however, no data exist regarding its relationship with 90-day prognosis in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic liver disease. Methods: In this study, 3,758 participants (955 with advanced fibrosis and 2,803 with cirrhosis) from the CATCH-LIFE cohort in China were included. The relationships between different AST/ALT ratios and the risk of adverse 90-day outcomes (death or liver transplantation) were determined in patients with cirrhosis or hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated advanced fibrosis, respectively. Results: In the patients with HBV-associated advanced fibrosis, the risk of 90-day adverse outcomes increased with AST/ALT ratio; after adjusting for all confounding factors, the risk of adverse 90-day outcomes was the highest when AST/ALT ratio was more than 1.08 (OR = 6.91 [95% CI = 1.789-26.721], p = 0.005), and the AST/ALT ratio of >1.9 accelerated the development of adverse outcomes. In patients with cirrhosis, an AST/ALT ratio > 1.38 increased the risk of adverse 90-day outcomes in all univariables (OR = 1.551 [95% CI = 1.216-1.983], p < 0.001) and multivariable-adjusted analyses (OR = 1.847 [95% CI = 1.361-2.514], p < 0.001), and an elevated AST/ALT ratio (<2.65) accelerated the incidence of 90-day adverse outcomes. An AST/ALT ratio of >1.38 corresponded with a more than 20% incidence of adverse outcomes in patients with cirrhosis. Conclusion: The AST/ALT ratio is an independent risk factor for adverse 90-day outcomes in patients with cirrhosis and HBV-associated advanced fibrosis. The cutoff values of the AST/ALT ratio could help clinicians monitor the condition of patients when making clinical decisions.

PURPOSE: The immature and developing hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis leads to different levels of thyroid function in twin neonates, including free thyroxine (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. No reference intervals for twins have been established until now. To compensate for this lack, we collected data and established this standard across different gestational ages (GAs) and sexes. METHODS: A total of 273 pairs of neonates admitted to the NICU in Southeast China from 2015 to 2022 were included. Each pair was divided into Neonate A (relatively heavy birth weight (BW)) and Neonate B (relatively light BW). Their thyroid functions were analyzed to establish reference intervals and comparisons were made stratified by GA and sex. RESULTS: The FT3, FT4, and TSH reference intervals in twin neonates with a GA of 26-36 weeks were as follows: Neonate A and B: 3.59 ± 0.99 and 3.57 ± 1.00 pmol/L; Neonate A and B: 17.03 ± 5.16 and 16.77 ± 5.29 pmol/L; and Neonate A and B: 4.097 ± 3.688 and 4.674 ± 4.850 mlU/L, respectively. There were significant differences between serum FT3 and FT4 reference intervals and GA (p < 0.05). The serum FT3 and FT4 reference intervals for male neonates were lower than those for female neonates in the 29-32-week group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This was the first study, to our knowledge, to establish reference intervals for thyroid function in twin neonates from the fifth to seventh day of life, which will be beneficial for the diagnosis and management of congenital hypothyroidism.

The allocation of budgets for renewable energy (RE) technology is significantly influenced by geopolitical risks (GPRs), reflecting the intricate interplay among global political dynamics, social media narratives, and the strategic investment decisions essential for advancing sustainable energy solutions. Against the backdrop of increasing worldwide initiatives to transition to RE sources, it is crucial to understand how GPR affects funding allocations, informing policy decisions, and fostering international collaboration to pursue sustainable energy solutions. Existing work probes the nonlinear effect of GPR on RE technology budgets (RTB) within the top 10 economies characterized by substantial research and development investments in RE (China, USA, Germany, Japan, France, South Korea, India, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Italy). Past research largely focused on panel data techniques to delve the interconnection between GPR and RE technology, overlooking the distinctive characteristics of individual economies. Contrarily, existing investigation implements the "Quantile-on-Quantile" tool to explore this association on an economy-particular basis, enhancing the precision of our analysis and offering both a comprehensive global perspective and nuanced perceptions for entire countries. The findings manifest a significant reduction in funding for RE technology associated with GPR across various quantile levels in the chosen economies. The disparities in results spotlight the necessity for policymakers to perform thorough assessments and carry out competent strategies to address the variations in GPR and RTB.

Mental load is a major cause of human-induced accidents. In this study, an explosive impact sensitivity experiment was used to induce mental load. A combination of subjective questionnaires and objective prospective time-distance tests were used to judge whether subjects experienced mental load. Four indicators, namely, ß, γ, mean pupil diameter, and fixation time were selected by statistical analysis and PCA for the construction of a mental load assessment model. The study found that the occipital lobe was the most sensitive to mental load, especially ß and γ bands. Lastly, it was found that subjects showed different degrees of mental load for the same mental load induction task. The results of the study are applicable to the evaluation and monitoring of the mental characteristics of workers and provide a scientific basis for adjusting the mental load of workers over time to reduce the rate of accidents and enhance production efficiency.


Mental load is the main cause of human-induced accidents. This study used an explosive impact sensitivity experiment to induce mental load in subjects. We found that the mean pupil diameter and fixation time, as well as the beta and gamma bands in the occipital lobe were most sensitive to mental load.

Chromatin remodeling is a critical step in the DNA damage response, and the ATP-dependent chromatin remodelers are a group of epigenetic regulators that alter nucleosome assembly and regulate transcription factor accessibility to DNA, preventing genomic instability and tumorigenesis caused by DNA damage. The SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex is one of them, and mutations in the gene encoding the SWI/SNF subunit are frequently found in digestive tumors. We review the most recent literature on the role of SWI/SNF complexes in digestive tumorigenesis, with different SWI/SNF subunits playing different roles. They regulate the biological behavior of tumor cells, participate in multiple signaling pathways, interact with multiple genes, and have some correlation with the prognosis of patients. Their carcinogenic properties may help discover new therapeutic targets. Understanding the mutations and defects of SWI/SNF complexes, as well as the underlying functional mechanisms, may lead to new strategies for treating the digestive system by targeting relevant genes or modulating the tumor microenvironment.

Introduction: Cells expressing taste signaling elements in non-gustatory tissues have been described as solitary chemosensory cells (SCCs) or tuft cells. These "taste-like" cells play a critical role in the maintenance of tissue homeostasis. Although the expression of SCC markers and taste signaling constituents has been identified in mouse gingivae, their role in periodontal homeostasis is still unclear. Methods: Public RNA sequencing datasets were re-analyzed and further validated with RT-PCR/qRT-PCR and immunofluorescent staining to explore the expression of TAS2Rs and downstream signaling constituents in mouse gingival fibroblasts (MGFs). The specific action of salicin on MGFs via Tas2r143 was validated with RNA silence, heterologous expression of taste receptor/Gα-gustducin and calcium imaging. The anti-inflammatory effects of salicin against LPS-induced MGFs were investigated in cell cultures, and were further validated with a ligature-induced periodontitis mouse model using Ga-gustducin-null (Gnat3-/-) mice. Results: The expression of Tas2r143, Gnat3, Plcb2, and TrpM5 was detected in MGFs. Moreover, salicin could activate Tas2r143, elicited taste signaling and thus inhibited LPS-induced chemokines expression (CXCL1, CXCL2, and CXCL5) in MGFs. Consistently, salicin-treatment inhibited periodontal bone loss, inflammatory/chemotactic factors expression, and neutrophil infiltration in periodontitis mice, while these effects were abolished in Gnat3-/- mice. Discussion: Gingival fibroblasts play a critical role in the maintenance of periodontal homeostasis via "SCC-like" activity. Salicin can activate Tas2r143-mediated bitter taste signaling and thus alleviate periodontitis in mouse, indicating a promising approach to the resolution of periodontal inflammation via stimulating the "SCC-like" function of gingival fibroblasts.

Introduction: Fresh Aareca nut fruit for fresh fruit chewing commonly found in green or dark green hues. Despite its economic significance, there is currently insufficient research on the study of color and luster of areca. And the areca nut fruits after bagging showed obvious color change from green to tender yellow. In the study, we tried to explain this interesting variation in exocarp color. Methods: Fruits were bagged (with a double-layered black interior and yellow exterior) 45 days after pollination and subsequently harvested 120 days after pollination. In this study, we examined the the chlorophyll and carotenoid content of pericarp exocarp, integrated transcriptomics and metabolomics to study the effects of bagging on the carotenoid pathway at the molecular level. Results: It was found that the chlorophyll and carotenoid content of bagged areca nut (YP) exocarp was significantly reduced. A total of 21 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) and 1784 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened by transcriptomics and metabolomics. Three key genes in the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway as candidate genes for qPCR validation by co-analysis, which suggested their role in the regulation of pathways related to crtB, crtZ and CYP707A. Discussion: We described that light intensity may appear as a main factor influencing the noted shift from green to yellow and the ensuing reduction in carotenoid content after bagging.

Objective This population-based cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between thyroid hormones and renal function in euthyroid Chinese individuals, as the relationship between thyroid hormones and renal function in this population remains unclear. Methods A total of 661 participants were included in the study after excluding individuals with thyroid diseases, incomplete clinical measurements, or those taking medications affecting thyroid function. Participants were categorized into three groups based on serum thyroid hormone and antibody levels. The study adjusted for covariates and assessed the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) in relation to thyroid hormone levels. Results After adjusting for covariates, the study found a significant increase in GFR in the middle and highest tertiles of free triiodothyronine (FT3) and the highest tertile of total triiodothyronine (TT3). Serum FT3 and TT3 levels were significantly associated with GFR. Additionally, the study observed a significantly lower GFR in the highest tertile of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) compared to the lowest tertile. However, thyroid hormone and antibody levels were not associated with the ACR. Furthermore, the highest tertiles of TT3 and total thyroxine (TT4) were associated with a decreased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Conclusion In our study among euthyroid Chinese individuals, we observed a significant association between thyroid function and GFR. Specifically, lower FT3, TT3, and higher TSH were associated with reduced GFR, indicating a potential role for thyroid hormones in maintaining renal function. Furthermore, lower levels of TT3 and TT4 were associated with an increased risk of CKD. These findings suggest a direct link between thyroid and renal function, even in euthyroid individuals, emphasizing the need for further investigation to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic implications.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is closely associated with frailty, and prevention of acute exacerbations is important for disease management. Moreover, COPD patients with frailty experience a higher risk of acute exacerbations. However, the frailty instruments that can better predict acute exacerbations remain unclear. Purpose: (1) To explore the factors influencing frailty and acute exacerbations in stable COPD patients, and (2) quantify the ability of multidimensional frailty instruments to predict acute exacerbations within 1 year. Patients and methods: In this retrospective longitudinal study, stable COPD patients were recruited from the outpatient department of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital from July 2022 to June 2023. COPD patients reviewed their frailty one year ago and their acute exacerbations within one year using face-to-face interviews with a self-developed frailty questionnaire. Frailty status was assessed using the Frailty Index (FI), frailty questionnaire (FRAIL), and Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS). One-way logistic regression was used to explore the factors influencing frailty and acute exacerbations. Multivariate logistic regression was used to establish a prediction model for acute exacerbations, and the accuracy of the three frailty instruments was compared by measuring the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: A total of 120 individuals were included. Frailty incidence estimates using FI, FRAIL, and CFS were 23.3%, 11.7%, and 15.8%, respectively. The three frailty instruments showed consistency in COPD assessments (P<0.05). After adjusting for covariates, frailty reflected by the FI and CFS score remained an independent risk factor for acute exacerbations. The CFS score was the best predictor of acute exacerbations (AUC, 0.764 (0.663-0.866); sensitivity, 57.9%; specificity, 80.0%). Moreover, the combination of CFS plus FRAIL scores was a better predictor of acute exacerbations (AUC, 0.792 (0.693-0.891); sensitivity, 86.3%; specificity, 60.0%). Conclusion: Multidimensional frailty assessments could improve the identification of COPD patients at high risk of acute exacerbations and facilitate targeted interventions to reduce acute exacerbations in these patients.

Hepatectomy is still the major curative treatment for patients with liver malignancies. However, it is still a big challenge to remove the tumors in the central posterior area, especially if their location involves the retrohepatic inferior vena cava and hepatic veins. Ex vivo liver resection and auto-transplantation (ELRA), a hybrid technique of the traditional liver resection and transplantation, has brought new hope to these patients and therefore becomes a valid alternative to liver transplantation. Due to its technical difficulty, ELRA is still concentrated in a few hepatobiliary centers that have experienced surgeons in both liver resection and liver transplantation. The efficacy and safety of this technique has already been demonstrated in the treatment of benign liver diseases, especially in the advanced alveolar echinococcosis. Recently, the application of ELRA for liver malignances has gained more attention. However, standardization of clinical practice norms and international consensus are still lacking. The prognostic impact in these oncologic patients also needs further evaluation. In this review, we summarized the principles and recent progresses on ELRA.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common psychological disorder worldwide, affecting mental and physical health. Previous studies have explored the benefits of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) intake in depressive symptoms; however, few studies have focused on the association between all types of fatty acids intake and depressive symptoms. Therefore, we explored the relationship between the intake of different fatty acids intake and the risk of depressive symptoms. METHODS: The study was based on the data from the 2005-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a large US-based database. We used a nutrient residual model and multi-nutrient density model for the analysis. We calculated the nutrient density and residual in men and women separately, and the fatty acids intake was divided into quartiles based on the sex distribution. The relationship between the depressive symptoms and the intake of different fatty acids was examined using logistic regression; furthermore, we explored the relationships separately in men and women. RESULTS: The intake of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and PUFAs, particularly n-3 and n-6 PUFAs, were associated with reduced odds ratios for depressive symptoms. The inverse relationship between the intake of MUFAs, PUFAs, n-3, and n-6 PUFAs and depressive symptoms was stronger in women. The inverse relationship between total fatty acid (TFAs) intake and depressive symptoms existed only in a single model. In contrast, saturated fatty acid (SFAs) intake was not related to depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION: Consuming MUFAs and PUFAs can counteract the depressive symptoms, especially in women.

BACKGROUND: Acute decompensation (AD) of cirrhosis is associated with high short-term mortality, mainly due to the development of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). Thus, there is a need for biomarkers for early and accurate identification of AD patients with high risk of development of ACLF and mortality. Soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (sTREM-1) is released from activated innate immune cells and correlated with various inflammatory processes. AIM: To explore the prognostic value of sTREM-1 in patients with AD of cirrhosis. METHODS: A multicenter prospective cohort of 442 patients with cirrhosis hospitalized for AD was divided into a study cohort (n = 309) and validation cohort (n = 133). Demographic and clinical data were collected, and serum sTREM-1 was measured at admission. All enrolled patients were followed-up for at least 1 year. RESULTS: In patients with AD and cirrhosis, serum sTREM-1 was an independent prognosis predictor for 1-year survival and correlated with liver, coagulation, cerebral and kidney failure. A new prognostic model of AD (P-AD) incorporating sTREM-1, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total bilirubin (TBil), international normalized ratio (INR) and hepatic encephalopathy grades was established and performed better than the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD), MELD-sodium (MELD-Na), chronic liver failure-consortium (CLIF-C) ACLF and CLIF-C AD scores. Additionally, sTREM-1 was increased in ACLF and predicted the development of ACLF during first 28-d follow-up. The ACLF risk score incorporating serum sTREM-1, BUN, INR, TBil and aspartate aminotransferase levels was established and significantly superior to MELD, MELD-Na, CLIF-C ACLF, CLIF-C AD and P-AD in predicting risk of ACLF development. CONCLUSION: Serum sTREM-1 is a promising prognostic biomarker for ACLF development and mortality in patients with AD of cirrhosis.

Chemical cleaning and disinfection are crucial steps for eliminating infection in root canal treatment. However, irrigant selection or irrigation procedures are far from clear. The vapor lock effect in the apical region has yet to be solved, impeding irrigation efficacy and resulting in residual infections and compromised treatment outcomes. Additionally, ambiguous clinical indications for root canal medication and non-standardized dressing protocols must be clarified. Inappropriate intracanal medication may present side effects and jeopardize the therapeutic outcomes. Indeed, clinicians have been aware of these concerns for years. Based on the current evidence of studies, this article reviews the properties of various irrigants and intracanal medicaments and elucidates their effectiveness and interactions. The evolution of different kinetic irrigation methods, their effects, limitations, the paradigm shift, current indications, and effective operational procedures regarding intracanal medication are also discussed. This expert consensus aims to establish the clinical operation guidelines for root canal irrigation and a position statement on intracanal medication, thus facilitating a better understanding of infection control, standardizing clinical practice, and ultimately improving the success of endodontic therapy.

This study longitudinally evaluated the immune response in individuals over a year after receiving three doses of an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, focusing on reactions to Omicron breakthrough infections. From 63 blood samples of 37 subjects, results showed that the third booster enhanced the antibody response against Alpha, Beta, and Delta VOCs but was less effective against Omicron. Although antibody titres decreased post-vaccination, SARS-CoV-2-specific T-cell responses, both CD4+ and CD8+ , remained stable. Omicron breakthrough infections significantly improved neutralization against various VOCs, including Omicron. However, the boost in antibodies against WT, Alpha, Beta, and Delta variants was more pronounced. Regarding T cells, breakthrough infection predominantly boosted the CD8+ T-cell response, and the intensity of the spike protein-specific T-cell response was roughly comparable between WT and Omicron BA.5.

Organophosphorus poisoning is a critical condition that can cause central nervous system depression, respiratory failure, and death early on. As its clinical manifestations closely resemble those of carbamate pesticide poisoning, the aim of this case study is to present a case of misdiagnosis, initially identifying carbofuran poisoning as organophosphate in a patient suspect of a heatstroke. We also present a case of intentional self-poisoning with organophosphate dichlorvos to underline the likelihood of pesticide poisoning in patients exhibiting acute cholinergic symptoms when the ingested substance is not known. In such cases, empirical treatment with atropine and oxime can be started pending timely differential diagnosis to adjust treatment as necessary.

Low testosterone (T) levels are associated with many common diseases, such as obesity, male infertility, depression, and cardiovascular disease. It is well known that environmental cadmium (Cd) exposure can induce T decline, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. We established a murine model in which Cd exposure induced testicular T decline. Based on the model, we found Cd caused mitochondrial fusion disorder and Parkin mitochondrial translocation in mouse testes. MFN1 overexpression confirmed that MFN1-dependent mitochondrial fusion disorder mediated the Cd-induced T synthesis suppression in Leydig cells. Further data confirmed Cd induced the decrease of MFN1 protein by increasing ubiquitin degradation. Testicular specific Parkin knockdown confirmed Cd induced the ubiquitin-dependent degradation of MFN1 protein through promoting Parkin mitochondrial translocation in mouse testes. Expectedly, testicular specific Parkin knockdown also mitigated testicular T decline. Mito-TEMPO, a targeted inhibitor for mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS), alleviated Cd-caused Parkin mitochondrial translocation and mitochondrial fusion disorder. As above, Parkin mitochondrial translocation induced mitochondrial fusion disorder and the following T synthesis repression in Cd-exposed Leydig cells. Collectively, our study elucidates a novel mechanism through which Cd induces T decline and provides a new treatment strategy for patients with androgen disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although socioeconomic factors are important determinants of population mortality, the effect of educational level on the survival of patients with cancer in China is unclear. This study aimed to assess whether educational level is associated with the prognosis of patients with cancer and to explore the mediators of this association. METHODS: This multicentre cohort study included 18,251 patients diagnosed with cancer between May 2013 and December 2018. The main parameters measured were overall survival (OS) and all-cause mortality. The relationship between educational level and all-cause mortality was assessed using multifactor-corrected Cox survival analysis. Logistic regression was used to analyze the association between educational level and patient-generated subjective global assessment (PG-SGA). RESULTS: The mean age of the 18,251 participants (men, 9939 [54.4%]) was 57.37 ± 11.66 years. Multifactorial survival analysis showed that patients survived longer with increasing education (university and above vs. elementary school and below; p = p = <0.001, HR = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.77-0.92), and the differences were statistically significant in different subgroups. The potential impact factors included sex, age, TNM stage, and PG-SGA score. Logistic regression showed a significant negative association between educational level and the modifiable factor PG-SGA (secondary vs. primary and below; p = 0.004, HR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.83-0.97; university and above vs. primary and below; p < 0.001, HR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.71-0.88). CONCLUSIONS: Educational level was a significant prognostic factor for patients with cancer, independent of other known prognostic factors. This association was further improved by modifying the nutritional status.
